Graduating High School and College on the Same Day

By the time Leighton Overall graduated high school on May 15, 2026, she had already earned her Associate in Science degree through 91快播’s Career & College Promise Program, giving her an incredible head start on her future.

On May 15, 2026, Leighton Overall celebrated a milestone few students ever experience: graduating from high school and 91快播 on the very same day with both a high school diploma and an Associate in Science degree in hand.

For Leighton Beth Overall of Newport, learning has never been limited to one classroom, one subject, or one path. As a homeschool student, multi-sport athlete, science researcher, referee, and outdoor enthusiast, she has always approached life with curiosity and determination.

Through Carteret鈥檚 Career & College Promise program, also known as CCP, Leighton was able to turn that curiosity into an extraordinary achievement. While completing high school, she also earned college credit, explored advanced coursework, and built a strong academic foundation for her next chapter at North Carolina State University.

For Leighton, the opportunity was never simply about finishing early.

鈥淚 was more curious about other opportunities to learn,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t wasn鈥檛 until my senior year that I understood the financial benefit that earning a degree while in high school would be.鈥

Discovering Opportunity Through CCP

Leighton first learned about Carteret鈥檚 CCP program through her older siblings, Landon and Lauren, who also completed associate degrees while being homeschooled. Seeing their success helped introduce her to the possibilities available through dual enrollment.

She began taking classes in tenth grade because she wanted to explore horticulture science. What started as a chance to learn something new quickly grew into a pathway that helped prepare her for college-level expectations, different teaching styles, and more advanced coursework.

three people standing outside by the water and one with a graduation gown onThrough CCP, Leighton earned an Associate in Science degree, the same degree completed by her siblings before her.

鈥淚t helps me financially when going to college,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t also lowers the amount of time spent at college since many of my classes overlap with college requirements.鈥

A Unique Student with Big Goals

Leighton鈥檚 academic interests reflect her love of science, nature, and problem-solving. During high school, she took courses in Agricultural Biotechnology, Greenhouse Operations, and Molecular Genetics. She also completed research with the North Carolina Youth Institute, where she was recognized as a Borlaug Scholar.

Outside the classroom, Leighton stayed active as a soccer, basketball, and cross-country athlete. She also served as an NCSRA referee and continued running an outdoor summer science camp for children ages 4 to 7, a program she first began at just nine years old.

Her future goals are rooted in the same curiosity and love for the natural world.

This fall, Leighton will attend NC State University鈥檚 College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, where she plans to study Plant Biology and Genetics. She is interested in careers such as agronomy and plant breeding, with hopes of helping farmers in areas affected by limited resources, plant disease, and changing climates.

鈥淚 want to help make farming easier for countries that have limited access to supplies and are affected by changing climates,鈥 she said.

Learning, Challenge, and Support at Carteret

Leighton鈥檚 experience at Carteret helped her grow academically and personally. She especially appreciated the opportunity to take courses that connected directly to her future interests.

Greenhouse Operations helped prepare her for her future major, while Calculus challenged her to step outside her comfort zone and push herself academically.

Completing Calculus II became one of her proudest accomplishments.

鈥淚t was an extremely difficult class for me,鈥 she said. 鈥淏ut I was determined that I would be able to learn the material to the best of my ability.鈥

Throughout her time at Carteret, Leighton found encouragement from faculty who were willing to answer questions, offer guidance, and help students succeed.

鈥淢s. Chambers, my math instructor, always encouraged questions and was a great listener,鈥 Leighton shared. 鈥淢r. Lupton, my Biology instructor, would go out of his way to read my research papers for other classes and mentor me on how to improve them.鈥

That support helped make college-level learning feel welcoming and manageable, even while balancing the demands of homeschool coursework, athletics, and other activities.

鈥淚 have always had success with instructor communication at Carteret,鈥 she said. 鈥淲henever I had questions or needed another explanation, they were willing to set up a time to meet or quickly respond by email.鈥

Balancing Homeschool, College, and Life

Completing both high school and college requirements takes dedication, organization, and maturity. For Leighton, the coursework itself was manageable, but balancing multiple responsibilities sometimes became challenging.

Between college classes, sports practices, games, and different locations, her schedule could become busy quickly.

鈥淚 like to participate in all things,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 difficult for me to remember that I have to say no at times in order to meet deadlines and work to the best of my abilities.鈥

Through CCP, she developed important skills in time management, communication, and self-advocacy. Those lessons will continue to serve her well as she transitions to NC State.

The experience also made the idea of attending a four-year university feel less intimidating.

鈥淚t has shown me what it would be like in college, with more difficult classes and different teaching styles,鈥 she said.

A Family Legacy of CCP Success

Leighton鈥檚 accomplishment is part of a larger family story at 91快播. She is the third sibling in her family to earn an Associate in Science degree through CCP before transferring to a university.

Her brother Landon continued from Carteret to UNC-Chapel Hill, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics. He later completed a Master of Science in Mathematics at UNC Wilmington.

BV4A8541Her sister Lauren also earned her degree through Carteret before discovering a passion for forensics and pathology. She is now completing a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry.

Together, their journeys show the lasting impact CCP can have on students and families.

鈥淣ow three of us have graduated with our A.S. degrees and been admitted to our selected colleges,鈥 Leighton shared. 鈥淲e have saved time, money, and met amazing faculty along our journeys.鈥

More Than College Credit

For Leighton, CCP was not just about earning credits or saving money. It was about being prepared for what comes next.

鈥淔or me, it wasn鈥檛 about finishing early,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t was about being ready for more advanced coursework and making the most of the opportunities available to me.鈥

Her time at Carteret also gave her meaningful campus experiences beyond academics. She enjoyed SGA events, crafts, fairs, and even 鈥淟ove on a Leash,鈥 where students had the chance to spend time with therapy dogs before class.

She also fondly remembers study dates with her mom in the Bryant Student Center and lunch dates with her dad, who works nearby.

These moments helped make Carteret feel like more than a place to take classes. It became part of her high school experience, her college foundation, and her family鈥檚 educational journey.

Advice for Future CCP Students

For homeschool students or high school students who may feel nervous about taking college classes, Leighton offers simple advice: ask questions and communicate with your professors.

鈥淭his is your educational journey,鈥 she said. 鈥淚f you don鈥檛 understand something, ask.鈥

She also encourages families to see CCP as an opportunity to explore interests in a supportive environment.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a free educational opportunity to test yourself and explore your interests,鈥 she said. 鈥淭he professors are there to help you succeed. I had never met a staff member that was unkind or unwilling to help me if I had a problem.鈥

A Head Start on the Future

Leighton Overall鈥檚 story is a powerful example of what makes 91快播鈥檚 Career & College Promise program so unique. Through CCP, students can challenge themselves, explore career interests, save time and money, and gain confidence before stepping into the next stage of their education.

BV4A8497

On May 15, 2026, Leighton did more than graduate. She proved what is possible when curiosity meets opportunity.

With an Associate in Science degree already completed, a high school diploma in hand, and a future at NC State ahead of her, Leighton is stepping confidently into the next chapter of her journey.

Supporting People, Culture, and Growth at Carteret CC

Senior HR Director Shares a Passion for Employee Development, Workplace Culture, and Community College Leadership

As Senior HR Director, Amanda Bryant plays a vital role in supporting the people who make 91快播 successful. Through leadership, mentorship, and a deep commitment to employee development, she helps create a workplace culture where faculty and staff can thrive.

A Career Built on Helping Others

Amanda Bryant’s path into human resources began unexpectedly. After earning a degree in Parks & Recreation Management with an Outdoor Education Certification from Texas A&M University, she started her career as a Counselor/Teacher with Eckerd Youth Alternatives in Florida.

A chance conversation with the organization’s Vice President of Human Resources led to an opportunity in college recruiting and eventually a full-time role in HR. What started as a new challenge quickly became a lifelong passion.

“I found that I enjoyed the opportunity to help, guide, and advise others,” Amanda said. “I enjoyed researching options, shaping processes, and influencing outcomes that impact organizational culture and employee experiences.”

Thirty-five years later, she continues to invest in her profession through ongoing education and certifications with both the Society for Human Resource Management and the HR Certification Institute.

Advocacy, Growth, and the Work of HR

If Amanda had to describe her job in three words, they would be advocacy, support, and development.

As Senior HR Director, no two days are exactly alike. One day may involve helping employees navigate workplace challenges or answering questions about benefits and policies. Another may include strategic planning, compensation analysis, leadership development initiatives, compliance reviews, board reports, or training sessions.

She also facilitates professional development programs such as Crucial Conversations, Emerging Leaders Academy, KIKC sessions, and leadership training opportunities designed to help employees grow and succeed.

Amanda believes Human Resources plays a critical role in helping employees feel supported, valued, and equipped for success. In addition to ensuring fair and consistent practices, HR helps the college place the right people in the right positions, navigate complex compliance requirements, and connect employees with resources that support both personal and professional growth.

“What I enjoy most is working with people who are focused on the shared purpose of helping others grow,” Amanda said. “I enjoy the role I play in helping others grow.”

Creating Impact on Campus and Across the State

Among Amanda’s proudest accomplishments are the initiatives she has helped lead at 91快播, including Crucial Conversations, the Emerging Leaders Academy, and improvements to the college’s performance management process. These efforts have helped create a culture where employees receive meaningful feedback and professional development opportunities throughout the year.

Amanda’s influence extends beyond Carteret CC as well. She co-developed and teaches an HR Institute that helps train new HR professionals across North Carolina’s community college system. She also contributed to the Human Resources component of the North Carolina Community College System’s 2023鈥2026 Strategic Plan.

a women in an office setting smilingOne of her most notable achievements was helping establish the North Carolina Community College Human Resources Association. Elected by her peers as the organization’s founding president, Amanda helped launch the statewide association in 2024 and hosted its first annual meeting at 91快播 in 2025.

“It has been gratifying to work alongside other professionals to empower HR through collaboration and provide needed support, connections, and training across the Great 58,” she said.

One of the most rewarding aspects of Amanda’s work is helping employees navigate challenges and strengthen workplace relationships. She enjoys helping people consider different perspectives and encouraging productive conversations that lead to understanding and resolution.

“It is gratifying when someone who is ready to leave the college tries something new that we’ve discussed and ends up staying and thriving in their work,” Amanda said.

Advice, Perspective, and Leadership

For anyone considering a career in Human Resources, Amanda’s advice centers on communication.

“Aside from learning the HR body of knowledge and understanding compliance, invest in reading about communication and relationship skills,” she said. “Learning how to help people be curious and talk to each other is one of the best ways to enhance HR’s role in any organization.”

She believes great teams are built when people approach one another with positive regard, remain curious, and communicate openly鈥攅specially when situations become challenging.

For Amanda, a great workplace culture starts with a shared purpose.

“A great workplace culture is a place with a shared focus on a common mission where people are willing to work together and do more than is required to ensure mission success,” she said. “It’s a place where we regard each other with positive intent because of our shared mission.”

Beyond the Office

Outside of work, Amanda enjoys staying active in both her community and the outdoors. She volunteers with the Emerald Isle Sea Turtle Patrol, Newport Pig Cooking, and various activities through her church. In her free time, she enjoys spending time at the beach, boating, fishing, gardening, reading, and solving puzzle games.

Many colleagues may be surprised to learn that Amanda once competed on a synchronized swimming team in high school, helping her team win a city championship. She’s also skilled in home improvement projects, including roofing, laying tile, and installing hardwood floors.

Her favorite local treats include ice cream from Sweet Spot in Emerald Isle and Chick-fil-A waffle fries, while Morehead Burger Company and Floyd’s rank among her favorite local restaurants. A fan of author Karen Kingsbury, Amanda credits Crucial Conversations and Lead…for God’s Sake! as two of the most influential books in her life.

Through advocacy, support, and development, Amanda Bryant continues to help foster a workplace where employees feel valued, supported, and empowered to succeed鈥攕trengthening 91快播 and its mission every day.

Maegan Pigford’s Journey to Becoming a Respiratory Therapist

After graduating from Carteret鈥檚 Respiratory Therapy Program in May 2026, Maegan Pigford is beginning a career dedicated to helping others while creating a brighter future for herself and her daughter.

For Maegan Pigford, graduation was more than earning a degree. It was the culmination of years of determination, growth, and believing in herself when the path forward wasn’t always clear.

At 28 years old, Maegan recently joined the ranks of 91快播’s newest Respiratory Therapy graduates. This fall, she will begin her career as a Registered Respiratory Therapist at Carteret Health Care, a milestone that once felt far away but is now a reality.

Her journey to healthcare was not a traditional one.

Before entering the Respiratory Therapy Program, Maegan worked in the food service industry, coached gymnastics, and later stepped away from the workforce to focus on raising her daughter. Although she always knew she wanted to help people, she wasn’t sure what career path would allow her to make the greatest impact.

That changed after a conversation with a mentor through the Better Beginnings program.

One day, her mentor encouraged her to return to school and explore her options. Together, they met with an advisor at 91快播 and began discussing possible career paths.

As Maegan researched healthcare professions, Respiratory Therapy quickly stood out.

鈥淭he focus on the cardiopulmonary system, the variety of responsibilities, and the ability to make a difference in patient care really appealed to me,鈥 she said.

Today, after successfully completing the program, she knows she made the right choice.

鈥淓very time I had the opportunity to brighten a patient’s day or help make them more comfortable while hospitalized, it confirmed that this was where I was supposed to be,鈥 she shared.

A Program Designed for Success

From the beginning, Maegan knew the Respiratory Therapy Program would be challenging.

She expected a rigorous curriculum, extensive clinical experiences, and a steep learning curve. What she found was all of that and more.

鈥淭he first semester, you really eat, sleep, and breathe respiratory therapy,鈥 she said.

female student in a medical settingBut the hands-on nature of the program and the opportunity to begin clinical experiences early helped transform classroom knowledge into real-world confidence.

Students gain experience in a variety of healthcare settings, working alongside experienced respiratory therapists and caring for patients across different stages of life.

鈥淲e were able to attend clinicals from the beginning of the program,鈥 Maegan explained. 鈥淭he variety of locations really helps students understand all the possibilities that come with being a respiratory therapist.鈥

Those experiences helped her develop confidence in patient assessment, critical thinking, and clinical decision-making, skills she now feels prepared to use every day in her profession.

The Power of Support

While the Respiratory Therapy Program helped prepare Maegan academically and clinically, the support she received outside the classroom played an equally important role in her success.

Throughout her time at Carteret, she utilized resources including TRIO, WIOA, childcare assistance, advising services, study spaces, faculty mentorship, and clinical support.

鈥淭RIO, CCAMPIS, and WIOA gave me the support, resources, and guidance to be successful and persevere,鈥 she said.

One person who made a lasting impact was TRIO advisor Melanie Reels.

鈥淢elanie always had her door open for me,鈥 Maegan shared. 鈥淲hether I needed encouragement, advice, or help finding solutions, she was always there.鈥

She also credits WIOA advisor Hedda Bunting and Respiratory Therapy instructors David Roach and Kim Miller for helping her stay motivated and focused throughout the program.

鈥淭he faculty were always supportive, encouraging, and willing to answer questions,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hey helped me grow into the respiratory therapist I’m becoming.鈥

For Maegan, these relationships reinforced one of the things that makes 91快播 unique: a genuine commitment to student success.

Confidence for the Future

Looking back, Maegan sees how much she has grown both personally and professionally.

The program strengthened her confidence, sharpened her clinical skills, and taught her that she is capable of achieving goals that once seemed out of reach.

鈥淚’ve learned that you can do anything you put your mind to,鈥 she said.

A female student standing on stage with her husband and daughter getting pinnedOne of her proudest accomplishments was graduating with a high GPA while earning multiple scholarships and awards along the way.

She also feels confident entering the workforce thanks to the program’s focus on board exam preparation, professional development, and career readiness.

鈥淭hey fully prepared us to take and pass our boards and taught us how to conduct ourselves in a professional medical environment,鈥 she said.

As she begins her career at Carteret Health Care, Maegan is excited about the future and the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of her patients.

A Message to Future Students

For anyone considering Respiratory Therapy or thinking about returning to school, Maegan offers simple advice:

鈥淒on’t put it off. Just do your best.鈥

She believes 91快播 provides students with the tools, resources, and support they need to succeed.

鈥淭here are so many people here who genuinely want to see you succeed,鈥 she said.

When reflecting on her experience, Maegan sums it up in one sentence:

鈥淚t wasn’t easy, but it was worth it.鈥

Her journey is a testament to the power of determination, support, and opportunity. Through 91快播’s Respiratory Therapy Program, Maegan not only found a career she loves鈥攕he found the confidence to build the future she always hoped for.

The Black History Committee and Culinary Arts Program at 91快播 are proud to present the 3rd Annual Taste of the South on Friday, June 19, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. inside the Hospitality & Culinary Arts Center.

Now in its third year, Taste of the South has become one of the College’s most anticipated events, bringing together community members, supporters, students, alumni, and local leaders for an evening that celebrates Southern culture, culinary excellence, education, and community impact.

At the heart of this year’s event is an exceptional team of emerging culinary professionals. Chefs Dajah Sandifer, Alasha Dillahunt, Derek Blanding, Aaliyah Battle, Teesha Dorsette, Michael Mauro, Faith Jones, and Princess Carr听have worked alongside faculty mentors to create an unforgettable dining experience that showcases their creativity, technical skills, and passion for hospitality.

For these students, Taste of the South serves as a hands-on learning opportunity that mirrors the demands of the professional culinary industry. From menu planning and preparation to presentation and service, the event allows students to demonstrate the skills they have developed through 91快播’s Culinary Arts Program while serving hundreds of guests from across the region.

This year’s menu celebrates the bold flavors and traditions of Southern cuisine through an elegant five-course dining experience:

Adding to the evening’s celebration, culinary student Princess Carr will perform an original spoken-word presentation, bringing an artistic and cultural element to the program that reflects the spirit and significance of the event. Her performance will complement the evening’s focus on heritage, perseverance, and community while highlighting the diverse talents of 91快播 students.

Serving as Master of Ceremonies for the evening is Ray Tillery, who will guide guests through the program and help celebrate the achievements of the students, scholarship recipients, and community partners who make this event possible.

While the event offers an unforgettable culinary experience, its impact extends far beyond the dining table. Proceeds from Taste of the South support the Gwen Fisher Memorial Scholarship, helping deserving students pursue their educational and career goals.

The event has also become a meaningful vehicle for community giving. Following last year’s Taste of the South, the Black History Committee donated $1,000 to support the Photography Program at 91快播.

During the College’s 2026 Black History Celebration, the committee further demonstrated its commitment to community service by awarding $1,000 each to four local organizations making a positive impact throughout our region:

Ja鈥橬aya George鈥檚 Radiography Journey

After graduating from Carteret鈥檚 Radiography Program in May 2026, Ja鈥橬aya George is stepping confidently into a future in healthcare with determination, passion, and purpose.

For Ja鈥橬aya George, earning her degree in radiography represents far more than completing a college program. It represents resilience, perseverance, and the determination to keep moving forward no matter the obstacles.

Originally from Havelock, North Carolina, Ja鈥橬aya recently graduated from 91快播鈥檚 Radiography Program and has already begun building her future in medical imaging after being hired as a student X-ray technician at CarolinaEast Medical Center. She plans to continue advancing her education by entering an MRI program in 2027 with the goal of becoming an MRI technologist.

鈥淚 knew from a young age that I wanted a college degree related to the medical field,鈥 Ja鈥橬aya shared.

That dream led her to 91快播 after researching radiography programs and searching for the right fit for her future.

Finding Opportunity Through Carteret and WIOA

Ja鈥橬aya鈥檚 path into the program was not guaranteed at first. After applying early to the 2024鈥2026 Radiography Program, she was initially placed on the alternate list. Then, just weeks later, she received life-changing news that a seat had opened for her in the program.

But shortly after accepting her spot, unexpected financial challenges appeared.

鈥淎 family member wrecked my car, and I had to clean out my savings to get another vehicle because I needed something reliable to transport to school and clinicals,鈥 she explained.

Despite the setbacks, Ja鈥橬aya stayed focused on her future and found support through 91快播鈥檚 Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) program.

The program became a major source of stability during one of the busiest and most demanding seasons of her life.

BV4A9696鈥淲IOA covered the cost of my education and books, allowing me to receive my full Pell Grant,鈥 she said.

WIOA also helped reimburse mileage expenses for travel to clinical sites during her first semesters in the program, easing the financial pressure that often comes with healthcare training.

鈥淭his drastically took away the stress of having to work and allowed me to focus on my schoolwork instead of working to keep bills paid,鈥 Ja鈥橬aya shared.

The support extended beyond financial assistance. Through WIOA, Ja鈥橬aya also received encouragement, career resources, and guidance that helped her stay motivated and focused on her goals.

鈥淵es, it has covered financial barriers for my training, and I receive emails about job opportunities through WIOA,鈥 she explained.

Overcoming Challenges with Support and Determination

During her time in the Radiography Program, Ja鈥橬aya faced several personal hardships that could have easily derailed her education.

Instead of facing those moments alone, Ja鈥橬aya found encouragement from the faculty and staff around her.

鈥淲hen I notified my program instructors and my WIOA advisor, they supported me throughout the process and told me to let them know if there was anything I needed,鈥 she said.

She credits the Radiography faculty for creating a supportive learning environment that helped students feel encouraged throughout the program.

鈥淢y instructors in the Radiography Program have been extremely patient and caring throughout my time in the program,鈥 Ja鈥橬aya shared.

She also expressed gratitude for WIOA advisor Hedda Bunting, who played a major role in her success.

鈥淪he鈥檚 given me tools to be successful throughout the program, and she鈥檚 been very encouraging along the way,鈥 Ja鈥橬aya said.

That support reminded her that she was never alone in the process.

Preparing for a Career in Healthcare

Through classroom instruction, hands-on clinical training, and workforce support, Ja鈥橬aya gained the confidence and experience needed to begin her healthcare career.

The Radiography Program helped prepare her not only technically, but personally, strengthening her confidence and ability to push through difficult moments.

鈥淚 am most proud of making it through this program,鈥 she shared. 鈥淭he process has not been easy, but I鈥檝e been given countless support and encouragement from the WIOA staff.鈥

Her journey is a powerful reminder that success is not always about having a perfect path. Sometimes it is about continuing forward even when life becomes difficult.

鈥淪ome people probably would鈥檝e just given up if they had to face the challenges I did while completing this program,鈥 she said.

But Ja鈥橬aya chose to keep going.

Encouraging Future Students

Now, as a recent graduate beginning her career in healthcare, Ja鈥橬aya hopes her story encourages others who may feel uncertain about their future or afraid to ask for help.

鈥淚 would encourage them to reach out to WIOA, to not be scared to ask for help, and to know that there are programs and people who truly care and want you to succeed,鈥 she said.

She also encourages students to communicate openly with advisors and instructors when challenges arise.

Student graduation鈥淭hey will do the best they can to help you or give you resources that can help,鈥 she explained.

For Ja鈥橬aya, 91快播 became much more than a place to earn a degree. It became a support system, a source of encouragement, and a foundation for the future she had always envisioned.

鈥91快播 is a college that cares about you and your well-being,鈥 she said. 鈥淎ll of the staff are very friendly and helpful.鈥

Her story reflects the impact that support programs like WIOA, dedicated faculty, and access to education can have on a student鈥檚 life.

With determination, encouragement, and opportunity, Ja鈥橬aya George turned challenges into motivation and built a future she can be proud of.

Silianna Gonzales Finds Her Future in Barbering

Through Carteret鈥檚 Barbering Program, Silianna 鈥淪ili鈥 Gonzales turned passion into purpose while building confidence, community connections, and a future she is proud of.

For Silianna Gonzales, barbering started with something simple: wanting better haircuts for her son.

What began as curiosity quickly turned into something much bigger, a career path that would challenge her, inspire her, and help her discover confidence she never knew she had.

Known to most as 鈥淪ili,鈥 the 23-year-old Morehead City native balanced life as a single mother, student, and employee while pursuing her goals through 91快播鈥檚 Barbering Program.

鈥淚 wanted to learn for my son,鈥 she shared. 鈥淏ut I was also curious about turning it into a career.鈥

Already interested in women鈥檚 hairstyling as a hobby, Sili saw barbering as an opportunity to expand her skills and create a future built on flexibility, creativity, and connection.

Taking a Chance and Finding Confidence

When 91快播 launched its first-ever Barbering Program, Sili decided to take a leap of faith.

鈥淲hat stood out to me was that it was the first barbering program offered,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 know what to expect. I just knew I wanted to be a part of it.鈥

The program鈥檚 location and flexible schedule made it possible for her to balance school with work and motherhood, but it was the hands-on learning environment that truly transformed her experience.

Throughout the program, Sili learned much more than haircutting techniques. She gained valuable communication skills, developed confidence, and learned how to create meaningful experiences for clients.

BV4A6880鈥淭his career is not just about a haircut,鈥 she explained. 鈥淚t鈥檚 about the overall experience for the client.鈥

From straight razor shaves and fades to coloring, perms, and non-surgical hair replacement techniques, the program gave her practical experience that prepared her for real-world barbering.

Working with real clients also helped her step outside of her comfort zone.

鈥淵ou never know what someone is going to want or what type of personality they鈥檒l have,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t taught me how to connect with people and truly understand what they want.鈥

One of the most meaningful parts of the program was participating in community outreach events, including providing free haircuts at local organizations and events such as Hope Mission and the Boys & Girls Club.

鈥淪eeing someone鈥檚 confidence spike after you hand them the mirror is always the best,鈥 Sili shared.

Those experiences reminded her that barbering has the power to positively impact people far beyond appearance.

Support, Growth, and Overcoming Challenges

A major part of Sili鈥檚 journey has been the support she received from her instructor, Mr. PJ.

鈥淗e doesn鈥檛 hold you back,鈥 she said. 鈥淗e throws you into the fire.鈥

That teaching style encouraged Sili to trust herself, take initiative, and become comfortable in situations that once intimidated her, especially considering she had never touched clippers before entering the program.

Mr. PJ also helped students learn how to build clientele, promote themselves professionally, and connect with potential clients in the community.

鈥淲e practice cold approaches and learn how to talk to strangers about our services,鈥 Sili explained. 鈥淣ow I can confidently build rapport with people and promote myself.鈥

The Barbering Program鈥檚 supportive environment helped Sili grow personally as much as professionally.

鈥淭his program has given me the mindset that I鈥檓 capable of doing anything,鈥 she shared.

BV4A9654Balancing school, a full-time job, and raising her five-year-old son was not easy.

鈥淏eing a single mom while working and doing school part-time is not for the weak-minded,鈥 she said.

But despite the challenges, Sili persevered and became the very first student to graduate from Carteret鈥檚 Barbering Program. On Thursday, May 19, 2026, she proudly crossed the stage as part of the college鈥檚 inaugural Barbering class, an accomplishment that represents years of determination, growth, and hard work.

She also credits Carteret鈥檚 support resources, including the SECU Scholarship, for helping her continue her education and purchase the supplies needed for the program.

鈥淏eing able to receive the scholarship made it possible to continue the program,鈥 she said.

Building a Future with Purpose

After graduation, Sili plans to work in a barbershop before eventually opening a business of her own.

Her long-term dream combines two of her passions: fitness and barbering.

鈥淥ne day I鈥檇 love to open a gym with a barbershop inside,鈥 she said.

She also hopes to specialize in non-surgical hair replacement services for clients experiencing alopecia.

鈥淢y goal is to give people confidence every time they leave my chair,鈥 she shared. 鈥淎nd maybe even a little therapy session too.鈥

For anyone considering barbering or thinking about enrolling at 91快播, Sili offers simple but meaningful advice:

鈥淜now your 鈥榳hy,鈥欌 she said. 鈥淚f your reason is strong enough, you鈥檒l keep showing up even when things get hard.鈥

She also wants future students to know that support is available and success is possible.

鈥淵ou have multiple resources to help you get supplies and pay for school,鈥 she said. 鈥淎ll you have to do is show up, be a sponge, and grow your skills.鈥

BV4A9556For Sili, barbering is about much more than a career.

鈥淏arbering to me is doing something I love and creating a career where I can fully immerse myself while helping people feel and look their best.鈥

Her story is a reminder that with determination, support, and opportunity, students can build not only careers, but confidence, purpose, and a future they believe in.

Miranda Goodwin Builds Her Future Through Carteret鈥檚 CNA Apprenticeship

Local student balances family, career, and education while making a difference in patient care

For Miranda Goodwin, a career in healthcare is more than a professional goal. It is a calling shaped by family, compassion, and a desire to care for others.

A native of Cedar Island now living in Davis with her two children and fianc茅, Goodwin is currently completing her training as a CNA I and II apprentice through 91快播 in partnership with Carteret Health Care. Her journey into healthcare began close to home.

鈥淢y mom inspired me. She has been a CNA for as long as I can remember,鈥 Goodwin said.

That inspiration led her to 91快播, where she had already heard strong praise about the CNA program. What she found was more than just training. It was an opportunity to step directly into the field while building her skills.

Learning Through Experience

Goodwin鈥檚 path into the apprenticeship program started with a simple expression of interest, but quickly turned into a life changing opportunity.

鈥淚t was a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience at the hospital while taking my classes,鈥 she said.

Through the partnership between 91快播 and Carteret Health Care, students like Goodwin are able to learn in the classroom while actively working in a real healthcare environment. For her, that combination has made all the difference.

Working in the hospital while training has been both challenging and rewarding.

Miranda Goodwin

鈥淚t is hands-on, fast-paced, and sometimes overwhelming, but also very rewarding,鈥 she shared.

Her daily responsibilities include checking vital signs, assisting with mobility, and supporting patients with essential care. These experiences have strengthened not only her technical skills but also her confidence.

鈥淚 feel more confident at work because I have the proper skills I learned during the apprenticeship,鈥 she said.

The Heart of Patient Care

While Goodwin has developed a strong foundation in clinical skills, it is the human connection that stands out most in her experience.

鈥淢y favorite part of the program has been caring for patients and hearing their life stories,鈥 she said.

She approaches every patient with empathy and respect, treating them as she would her own family.

鈥淚 treat each patient like they are my own family,鈥 she said.

Through her work, she has gained a deeper understanding of what compassionate care truly means.

鈥淐ompassion is just as important as clinical skills. It means taking the time to understand how a patient feels, not just focusing on the task,鈥 she explained.

Moments of connection with patients have reinforced her passion for the field. One interaction in particular has stayed with her.

鈥淎 patient once told me I was a sweet soul and wished there were more CNAs like me,鈥 she said.

Support, Growth, and Opportunity

Goodwin credits her success to the strong support system provided by both her instructors and her employer. At 91快播, faculty members have helped her build confidence and prepare for real world responsibilities.

鈥淢y instructors have been fantastic in preparing me to be the best CNA I can be,鈥 she said.

She also highlighted the encouragement she has received from her workplace.

鈥淭hey regularly check in to see if I need anything,鈥 she said.

That support has helped her overcome initial challenges, including the anxiety she felt when first starting in a hospital setting.

鈥淚 was nervous at first, but I overcame that anxiety and now I love my job,鈥 Goodwin said.

Balancing school, work, and family life has been no small accomplishment, and it is something she is especially proud of.

鈥淚 am proud of maintaining good grades and perfect attendance while raising two kids,鈥 she said.

Building a Career Close to Home

Through the apprenticeship program, Goodwin has already secured a position with Carteret Health Care, giving her a strong start in the field before even completing her certification.

Looking ahead, she plans to continue working in healthcare and exploring opportunities to grow within the field.

鈥淚 plan to keep working at Carteret Health Care and continue building my career,鈥 she said.

Her long term goals include gaining experience in both hospital and long-term care settings, allowing her to expand her skills and impact even more patients.

A Message to Future Students

Goodwin encourages others to consider a career as a CNA and to take advantage of apprenticeship opportunities.

鈥淚t is a hard job, but it is the most rewarding,鈥 she said.

She also emphasized the value of the program itself.

鈥淚t is a great program with so many resources available to help you succeed,鈥 she added.

For Goodwin, the experience has been more than just training. It has been a chance to grow personally, support her family, and make a difference in her community.

鈥淚 was blessed to be part of this program. It has given me so many opportunities and valuable skills,鈥 she said.

Through stories like hers, 91快播 continues to demonstrate how apprenticeship programs create real pathways to success, empowering students to build meaningful careers while serving the needs of their communities.

Callie Hartley Discovers a Passion for Patient Care Through Carteret鈥檚 CNA Apprenticeship

Hands-on experience and strong support help one student turn uncertainty into a meaningful healthcare career

Not every career path is a straight line. For Callie Hartley, it took exploring a different direction first to realize where she truly belonged.

Originally from Raleigh, North Carolina, Hartley moved to Carteret County shortly after graduating high school in 2025. She initially pursued cosmetology, but quickly realized it was not the right fit. That decision led her to reevaluate her goals and ultimately discover a passion for healthcare.

鈥淢y entire family works in healthcare, and I have always had a heart for helping others,鈥 Hartley said. 鈥淚 truly love caring for people, especially my patients, and I would not trade this career for anything.鈥

Today, she is a CNA I and II apprentice through 91快播, gaining real-world experience at Carteret Health Care while continuing her education.

A Fast Track to a New Future

Hartley learned about the CNA Apprenticeship program through the College鈥檚 CNA Program Chair, who guided her through every step of the process. From application to acceptance, she found support that made the transition into healthcare both smooth and encouraging.

One of the program鈥檚 most appealing aspects was its accelerated format.

鈥淚 was able to complete my CNA in less than six weeks while gaining real-world experience at the same time,鈥 she said.

Through the partnership between 91快播 and Carteret Health Care, Hartley has been able to work, learn, and grow simultaneously. For her, the opportunity has been life changing.

鈥淭his opportunity means everything to me. It allowed me to work, gain hands-on experience, and complete my education all at once,鈥 she shared.

Confidence Through Experience

Like many students entering the healthcare field, Hartley initially faced moments of uncertainty. One of her early concerns was navigating documentation and charting in a fast-paced clinical environment.

鈥淎t first, I was nervous about documentation and charting, but I quickly became comfortable, and that made a big difference in my confidence and daily performance,鈥 she said.

a female student in the hospital working on a medical cartHer daily responsibilities now include assisting patients, monitoring vital signs, checking blood sugar levels, and supporting overall patient care. As she advances into CNA II, she has also taken on more complex, nursing-related tasks.

Through repetition and real-world exposure, her confidence has continued to grow.

鈥淕aining experience every day has helped me become more confident and comfortable in my role,鈥 Hartley said.

The Power of Human Connection

For Hartley, the most meaningful part of her experience goes beyond clinical skills. It lies in the relationships she builds with patients and their families.

鈥淢y patients feel like family to me. I often think about them after my shift and hope they are doing well,鈥 she said.

One moment in particular stands out as a defining experience in her journey.

鈥淚 spent time sitting with a patient鈥檚 wife, playing cards with her for hours, and later praying with her during a very emotional moment,鈥 Hartley shared. 鈥淭hat experience confirmed for me that healthcare is where I belong.鈥

These experiences have deepened her understanding of compassion and the importance of emotional support in patient care.

鈥淐ompassion and patient care go hand in hand. It is about recognizing a patient鈥檚 needs and responding with empathy, respect, and kindness,鈥 she explained.

Support That Strengthens Success

Hartley credits both 91快播 and Carteret Health Care for providing a strong foundation for her success.

Her instructors have played a key role in her development, offering guidance, encouragement, and a supportive learning environment.

鈥淭hey have been incredibly supportive, approachable, and always willing to help or offer advice,鈥 she said.

Her employer has also provided meaningful support throughout her apprenticeship, including regular check-ins and financial assistance during training.

This level of collaboration between education and healthcare partners highlights the strength of the apprenticeship model, giving students the tools and support needed to succeed.

Growing Into the Future

Through the program, Hartley has not only developed technical skills but has also grown personally and professionally.

鈥淚t has helped me become more compassionate and more confident while maintaining professionalism,鈥 she said.

She is proud of the progress she has made in a short amount of time and is excited about what lies ahead.

After completing her CNA certification, Hartley plans to continue advancing her skills as a CNA II and pursue phlebotomy training. She also intends to remain with Carteret Health Care as she continues exploring long-term career options, including an interest in dermatology.

Encouraging Others to Take the Leap

Hartley encourages others who may be considering a career in healthcare to take the chance and explore the possibilities.

鈥淕o for it and give it your all. It is a career you will either love or not, but it opens so many doors,鈥 she said.

She also emphasized the value of the apprenticeship experience.

鈥淓ven though it is fast-paced, the hands-on experience makes it completely worth it,鈥 she added.

For Hartley, what began as uncertainty has transformed into clarity, purpose, and a strong start in the healthcare field. Through 91快播鈥檚 CNA Apprenticeship program, she has found not only a career path, but a calling.

Tony Patton鈥檚 Journey Through Carteret鈥檚 CNA Apprenticeship

Local student combines hands-on training and real-world experience to build a future in healthcare

For Tony Patton, building a career in healthcare is not just about gaining skills. It is about making a real difference in his community.

A Carteret County native from Stacy, Patton brings a unique background to the CNA I and II Apprenticeship program at 91快播. As both an equestrian and an entrepreneur, he understands the value of hard work, discipline, and dedication. Those same qualities are now shaping his path in healthcare.

鈥淚 wanted to pursue a career as a CNA because I want to make a genuine difference in people鈥檚 lives and help them in their time of need,鈥 Patton said.

Choosing 91快播 was a natural decision. Its strong reputation in healthcare training and close connection to the local community made it the right place to begin.

鈥淚t is local to my community and has a strong reputation for healthcare training,鈥 he said.

Learning While Working

Patton discovered the CNA Apprenticeship opportunity through the College鈥檚 program resources and clinical coordinators. The ability to gain real-world experience while continuing his education was a major factor in his decision to apply.

鈥淚 wanted to start working in the field while I learn and gain real-world experience,鈥 he said.

Through the partnership between 91快播 and Carteret Health Care, Patton is able to do just that. The program allows him to build skills in the classroom while applying them directly in a healthcare setting.

鈥淚t is a chance to grow professionally and build a career right here at home,鈥 he said.

Building Skills Through Experience

In the classroom and lab, Patton has developed a strong foundation in clinical protocols, patient care, vital signs, and emergency response procedures. Hands-on learning has played a key role in helping him feel prepared for real patient interactions.

鈥淭he lab simulations and practicing procedures until they become second nature have helped prepare me,鈥 he explained.

That preparation has carried over into his clinical experience, where he is gaining confidence through daily responsibilities and patient interaction.

鈥淢y favorite part of the program has been the hands-on learning during clinicals,鈥 he said.

As a CNA apprentice, Patton focuses on supporting patient needs while continuing to learn and grow in a fast-paced environment.

Making a Difference in Patient Care

For Patton, the most meaningful part of the experience comes from connecting with patients and knowing he is making a difference.

鈥淚t has impacted me personally by making me feel good about what I do and knowing I am able to help others,鈥 he said.

Tony Patton

One moment that stands out involved working with a patient experiencing dementia.

鈥淏eing able to communicate with a patient who was confused but still able to share memories and feel happy was a meaningful experience,鈥 he shared.

These interactions have reinforced the importance of compassion in healthcare.

鈥淚 have learned that compassion is the most important part. You have to show patients that they matter and that you understand them,鈥 Patton said.

Confidence Through Hands-On Learning

As a hands-on learner, Patton has found that direct experience has been essential to building his confidence.

鈥淭he hands-on experience has helped me grow my confidence a lot,鈥 he said.

Working and training in the same healthcare environment has also provided consistency and a deeper understanding of the role.

鈥淚t is great to be able to work and train in the same setting,鈥 he added.

Through the apprenticeship, he has gained insight into the responsibilities of a CNA and the important role they play in patient care.

Preparing for the Future

Patton feels confident about entering the healthcare field and continuing to grow in his career.

鈥淚 feel ready to enter the healthcare field and make a difference,鈥 he said.

Looking ahead, he has set clear goals for his future.

鈥淚 would like to become an Emergency Department Registered Nurse,鈥 Patton shared.

With the foundation he is building through the apprenticeship program, he is well on his way to achieving that goal.

A Strong Start in Carteret County

Patton credits both his instructor and the program for helping him stay on track and prepared for success.

鈥淢y instructor has guided us through the process and made sure we are ready to get started in the field,鈥 he said.

For him, the value of the program goes beyond training. It is about opportunity, growth, and building a future within his own community.

鈥淭his program is a great way to grow in the healthcare environment here in Carteret County,鈥 Patton said.

Through students like Tony Patton, 91快播 continues to demonstrate how apprenticeship programs create strong, local pathways into meaningful careers, helping students gain the skills they need while serving the communities they call home.
